College Town Hall: El Paso County Commissioners

The College Democrats, in collaboration with the College Republicans, present a County Commissioner Forum featuring both current commissioners and candidates from El Paso County. The audience will have the chance to engage directly with current County Commissioners Longinos Gonzalez, Jr. and Holly Williams, as well as candidates Bernard Byers and Naomi Lopez, who are running for positions in the upcoming election. Together, they will explore the crucial role county commissioners play in shaping local policies and governance. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the candidates' platforms, the challenges facing El Paso County, and pressing issues in local politics. This forum offers an in-depth look at the responsibilities of county commissioners and their impact on the community, with candidates also sharing their visions and plans for their districts.

This event is open and free to the community. Parking is free and light refreshments will be provided.


About the Speakers

Longinos Gonzalez, Jr:

Longinos Gonzalez, Jr. serves as the County Commissioner for District 4, representing southern and eastern El Paso County, including areas like Fountain, Security/Widefield, and parts of Colorado Springs.A graduate of the Air Force Academy, Longinos retired as a Lt. Colonel after a 20-year career as an Air Force Intelligence officer. He later earned a Master's in science education and taught in Harrison School District 2 before being elected. Longinos is active in the community, serving on the State Board of Veterans Affairs, volunteering at his church, and enjoying outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. He began his second term in office on January 12, 2021.

Holly Williams:

Holly Williams serves as the County Commissioner for District 1, covering northern El Paso County, including parts of Colorado Springs and areas like Woodmoor and Black Forest. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and a Master’s in Public Administration from UCCS. Holly previously served two terms as El Paso County Public Trustee, where she led efforts to improve foreclosure laws. Active in the community, Holly has been involved in various local organizations, including Scouting and the El Paso County Republican Party. In her free time, she enjoys playing the piano, reading, and spending time with her family. She began her second term on January 10, 2023.

Naomi Lopez:

Naomi Lopez is an educator and speech-language pathologist with deep roots in community service. Coming from a family of educators, she has dedicated her career to helping future leaders achieve their best possible outcomes. As a community organizer and educational advocate, Naomi is committed to serving her neighbors and improving the lives of those around her. She is a leader in her local teacher's union, a board director for the Colorado Springs Education Association, and a founding member of the Latina Equity Foundation. She also serves as the region representative for the Colorado Education Association Equity Council for Race and Culture. A proud resident of Colorado Springs' Westside for the past 18 years, Naomi holds a Master of Science in speech-language pathology from the University of New Mexico and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from New Mexico State University.

Bernard Byers:

Bernard "Bj" Byers is a long-time Colorado Springs resident and active community member. Known as Coach Bj, he lives with his wife, three children, and several pets. He enjoys basketball, concerts, and long-distance running. As a bank manager and founder of the Colorado Storm youth basketball program, Bernard is deeply involved in community service. He has served on various boards, including the Public Art Commission and The Resource Exchange, which supports families and children with disabilities. As County Commissioner for District 2, Bernard aims to improve education, public safety, and infrastructure, while focusing on community needs and youth involvement.
