The forty-five words of the First Amendment are rightly considered foundational for a free society. Frederick Douglas pointed to this when he said that “liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist.” This session will explore why religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition are essential for both individual freedom and for self-government and how the Supreme Court has interpreted these rights.
