A Government of Laws: The Structural Protections of the Constitution

Many Americans think that their rights are primarily protected by the Bill of Rights. But the drafters of the Constitution believed that without a properly designed Constitution no rights would be safe. And as Alexander Hamilton said, the Constitution even without a Bill of Rights “is itself, in every rational sense, and to every useful purpose, A Bill of Rights.” This session examined how the protection of liberty was supposed to be woven within the structure of the document through Separation of Powers, checks and balances, and federalism.
